Frequently Asked Question
Can I use the QR30N/QR40EMN rotary encoders in harsh environment?
Last Updated 4 years ago
QR30N, QR40EMN rotary encoders are intrinsically insensitive to dirt, dust, oil, gas, and other contaminants because the magnetic field is being sensed in a non-contacting manner.
To see if a sensor can be applied in a harsh environment, let's take these factors into account:
- Sensor Housing
the housing material of QR30N and QR40EMN is a special plastic called PBT((Arnite T06 202 PBT black). This kind of plastic has good chemical resistance. Its maximum use temperature is typically between 115 - 135°C . The specified operation temperature of the sensor is -25 to 80°C.
- Electronics
Designed for +85°C max. However, it is known in electronics that the higher the temperature, the lower the lifetime.
- Cable/Connector
QR30N is using PVC cable, which is resistant to flame, moisture, and abrasion. It also holds up against gasoline, ozone, acids, and solvents. The maximum temperature range of PVC material -55 °C to 105 °C. In our product, it is specified as for static use: -25°C to +80°C en for flexible use: -5° to +80°C. For flexible mounting bellow 0°C we advise to ask for an optional PUR cable.
QR40EMN has in default an M12 connector, optional with PUR cable, which is very flexible throughout a broad temperature range, typically between -40°C and +125°C. In our product, it is specified max. 80°C. Two major drawbacks of PURs are their susceptibility to microbial attack and the tendency of aromatic urethanes to discolor (yellow) when exposed to UV light.
- The Magnet
Neodymium/N35 magnet is included with the product. This type of magnet can withstand up to +80° but the magnetic field will deteriorate over a lifetime. for higher temperatures, it is suggested to buy another type of magnet. - Optional we can supply N25H magnets where H indicates: extended temperature range from 80°C to 120°C.
